Gorgeous Bedrooms with Dark Walls

Nothing transforms a room faster than changing the paint color. Try something new this season and add some drama to your bedroom with a dark, bold color. Dark colors add spirit, personality, and character to a room and there's nothing more dramatic than dark walls.

Most people think dark walls make a space dreary and depressing and, well, dark, but the truth is that a dark color is just as versatile as a light color. It's all about choosing the right color to define and highlight your room. Forget what you've heard about small spaces needing light colors. Using dark colors can actually make a small room look larger. These following examples show how to use dark colors on your walls to create your perfect bedroom.

Dark colors also make a room feel intimate and cozy, which is a great effect for a bedroom. To keep the room from being too dark, it's important to spread lighting around the room and use accessories that reflect light.

With dark walls, you don't need a lot of other colors or patterns. Dark walls provide the perfect backdrop for incorporating different textures. Add even more dimension using mirrors. This simple room uses a variety of fabric textures on the bedding and window treatments, but a very simple color palette to create an intimate space.

When using a dark color, it's important to create contrast. Using light fabric on furniture and for window treatments will make the room pop. Dark walls can also help tie together different styles of furniture. Choose furniture that is noticeably lighter than the wall to make the room appear brighter.

Dark tones can highlight architectural features and unusual wall shapes. Here the dark walls highlight the moulding and the unusual wall shape. The shape of this room would have been lost with light colored walls. Incorporating the wall color into the bedding creates a balance in the room.

If you are hesitant to paint your walls dark, using a deep neutral tone can be a good compromise. A deep neutral tone can highlight bright colors, which makes your whole space look brighter. If using a saturated color, choose one contrasting accent hue so the room is not overwhelming.

Another solution is to use a dark color on only one wall. One dark wall can make a room seem larger and is a great way to bring some bold color to a space without too much commitment.

Wow! So much great inspiration. I am personally loving the last picture with the darker blue walls against the beige/linen color. I really do like more of a high contrast rather than having the whole room dark like a cave.

Today I am sharing a "So Long Summer, Hello Fall" Tablescape. Since I am a HUGE fan of mexican food, I decided to create a sort of nacho bar theme. And the real reason...I have been dying to use my plates and bowls from Mexico!

All of the bright colors still remind me of summer, but the added texture with the napkin ring and place mat overlay bring in a bit of fall. The green place mat is actually a napkin draped over the side of the table. The little overlay was made on my Silhouette and I love how it adds another layered element. Can you believe that those navy and white striped napkins are actually paper napkins from target? Yep! The sunflowers also say summer, but the burnt red color says fall.

I am loving the mix of both seasons. How about you? Are you sad to see summer go or are you excited for the season ahead?

Hi, friends! I'm thrilled to be here on Eat. Sleep. Decorate. today! Amy has amazing taste and a gorgeous southern home, and I always look forward to her posts. I can't tell you how happy I am that spring is finally here. I've always loved winter and cold weather, but this year was just a little more than I could take. I'm welcoming these mild sunny days with open arms! The spring weather has me thinking a lot about spring decor. Since we are still renovating our house, it's not quite ready for a spring overhaul--so I've been enjoying some window shopping and virtual designing! Today I want to show you that you don't need bright springy furniture to make your home look like spring. It's all about the accents!

 Spring is all about color, but it's all about white too. For me, this means keeping things looking fresh and not letting one overpower the other. I prefer to have a white bedspread and change out the sheets and throw pillows seasonally. In my opinion, fresh flowers are a must for spring. Whether they are from your garden or from your grocery store, fresh flowers can make a world of difference in your home.

And who doesn't love a good bar cart? You can style the cart with the fixings for yummy spring cocktails, or you can use it to serve ice cream out of the adorable sundae bowls above. The options are endless!

When it comes to seasonal items, I try to be a bargain shopper. I prefer to invest in the staples and timeless pieces. So you may have guessed a few of my favorite places to shop for spring decor: TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning, Steinmart, and Target. I also love me some HomeGoods, but we don't have one close to home so I rarely get to indulge. I've also discovered that Etsy is a great place to shop for inexpensive art and prints. Parima Creative Studio, Siiso Visual Art, and Michelle Armas are a few of my favorites.

Going Beyond Red & Green: Bringing A New Feel to Holiday Décor

Some things about the holidays should remain constant. A tree, wreaths, candles, string lights; these are all essential to a well decorated home. But who’s to say your color palette can’t change as often as the seasons? There’s a way to incorporate the most unexpected color choices into winter décor; just as long as you have those basics, the accents you add in will be just as appropriate (and a lot more interesting) as the red and green you’ve been sticking to year after year.

Gold and Cream

If you want a classic palette, then you can never go wrong with gold and cream pieces. The elegance and timelessness of metallics isn’t to be questioned, and they look lovely when added in to almost any decorative style. Just make sure you eliminate as many other colors as possible; that winter wonderland effect is much easier to achieve when you tuck away your brightly colored accessories in favor of a more muted palette.

Turquoise and Brown

If you’re a little tired of the more traditional motifs, then branch out a little by choosing pieces that are a subtler call-out to the season. In this color combination, rustic wood tones are nicely balanced by faceted or glittery glass. They’re both an understated nod to that cheery wintery look; no need for elf figurines to get the point across. A roaring fire and some hot drinks on that tray will complete the picture of sophisticated, modern festivity.

Pink and Orange

If you want to try a color palette that’s even more outside the box, then why not be a pioneer and incorporate pink, the new Pantone color for 2014, into your holiday décor? And punchy, bright orange is the perfect complement to add into the mix. The combo is normally pretty summery, so be careful not to go overboard. The key here is to incorporate plenty of evergreen foliage along with white or metallic pieces, just using these brighter colors as the final layer of accents. This maintains the seasonal look, but adds a playful and energizing twist.

I’m honored that Amy asked me to give her my two cents about what her nursery should look like.  I came up with what, I hope, is a fun mix of both feminine and masculine elements that could be played up more either way with artwork and accessories, depending on which little blessing she brings home.  I’m excited to see her nursery come together and more excited about the plan God has for her family.

Don't you feel instantly relaxed when you look at this design? I seriously think I just got sleepy! (That's a good thing since baby needs to sleep in there.) That crib is just beautiful and oh so classy. The metallic edged mirror gives the room a little texture and you can never go wrong with stripes in a nursery whether in a rug, painting or window treatments! I love that sweet ottoman fabric. Take a look at it closely..it has animals mixed in with the leaves. So sweet! Thanks so much Emily! I absolutely love it!

Now I have some serious decisions to make. At least the walls and ceiling are prepped and painted. Now comes the fun part. Hi all!  I am so excited for Amy and her husband.  What an amazing journey!  I was thrilled when Amy asked me to participate in her neutral nursery series.  It's possible that if I had to chose what type of room to design over and over again for the rest of my life, it would be nurseries.  I'm a nursery fanatic. ;-)

I spoke with Amy regarding her budget, so there are a few splurges (glider & mirror) mixed with more reasonable items.  Babies see contrast best, so I kept the room in a relaxed, graphic, black and white with metallics feel.  The original watercolors are hip but still sweet enough for baby and toddler.

So let's talk about Abby's design, shall we? This is definitely a sophisticated babies room and I absolutely love it! Once again those water colors are amazing and I might have to get my hands on some of those! The glider is chic and could totally work in any room after baby is grown up. How about that amazing light fixture? I can only imagine what images it produces on the walls of the room when turned on. Baby would sure love that! And..last but not least is that adorable Moroccan Fringed Pouf! Love that it brings a little fun and texture into the room.
